Schools from Mizoram, West Bengal, SAI North East Centre and Jharkhand sealed their places in the quarter-finals of the sub-junior Under-14 section of the 56th Subroto Cup football tournament in the capital on Monday.
Mizoram’s Government Chawngfianga Middle School qualified for the quarter-finals after beating NSS MP Shikshya Niketan of Odisha 2-0 in the first match played at Ambedkar Stadium.
In other matches, West Bengal’s Jatragachi Pranabandana High School thrashed Government Senior Secondary School, Lakshwadeep, by a 9-0 margin while SAI NER Centre, Assam, edged past Sports Hostel of Nagaland 1-0 to go through to the last eight.

The Mizoram boys, who had a superior goal average having beaten the Haryana entry 11-0 in their opening match, needed just a draw against the Odisha team, who too had won their match against Haryana.
The Shikshya Niketan boys tried hard but could not penetrate the Mizoram defence. On the other hand, the Middle School boys played to their potential. Lalrin Moses was their star striker, scoring a brace.
In the day’s other matches, Bijang Loubuk, Manipur, registered a hard-fought 1-0 victory over St Xavier’s from Chattisgarh. The boys from Chhattisgarh played well with a few chances coming their way. But solid defence from the Manipur side kept the Chhattisgarh forwards at bay. John Lalkout Sangh was the saviour for the Manipur team with his neatly placed goal early in the match. Later, Delhi’s Mamta Modern Senior Secondary School got the better of Assam’s Nakachar Higher Secondary School 4-1.
In the first set of quarter-final clashes, Jatragachi Pranabandana High School, West Bengal, face SAI Northeast Centre Assam while Government Chawngfianga Middle School of Mizoram take on Jharkhand’s BS+2 High School.
